On one property I hunt I have kept a mineral site in the same spot for the past 8 years, its in the edge of a small field/clearing,the deer use it alot. Now the clear cut is getting big enough to hunt in,so I put a stand up last week were i've never hunted before because it was always too thick. Its about 220yds as the crow flies on the next ridge top,I like to hunt mineral sites the first half of archery season.I was thinking of putting another mineral site out in front of this stand for archery season.
Question is,am I wasteing my time with a already established site so close?

i wouldn't say it is a waste of time but with 2 sites kinda close all the deer are not gonna just concentrate on one site. you could stop putting mineral in the old site, after a year or so they will stop using it and just use the new one. that's been my experience anyways.

I'd prob hold off on putting them that close together. As above it gives them options as far as sites and if your hunting the site then that cuts your odds down. In my past experience even if you don't put minerals out deer will continue to use the site for a few years as the would will hold that for quite sometime.

I started a site this year during July 4 weekend. Through the middle of November, I never hunted the stand overlooking the mineral lick that at least one doe and every now and then a buck wouldn't stop by and eat the dirt. Never knew what I was missing. I killed a doe with bow, my first ever buck a 6pt with my bow, and later a very nice 7 pt that I was the biggest buck I had pics of all summer all over that one mineral lick.

How big is the property? By rule, you want to have one about every 100 acres. Though, I see different bachelor groups at different sites less than 300 yards a part. It all depends on how the property is laid out.
But to be honest, I have never hunted, nor (that I can remember) ever seen a deer using a salt lick with my own eyes. Sure i have spooked them when approaching. But with thousands of pics on up into October, you never know

The property is 104 acres,i'll probably hold off on it.I usually hunt the mineral site quite a bit during archery, looking to fill some doe tags.It get alot of use until about mid to late Oct,then I quit hunting it because the deer stop useing it.I can't count how many times i've had does and fawns come in to the mineral lick during day light hours.
