I picked up a new 10/22 over the holidays. It's in very good shape and I want it to stay that way. Somewhere along the way I've picked up the notion that lead ammo isn't the best option. Is there any reason I shouldn't use the lead?

No reason at all. Just clean it periodically

Is there any particular solvent that works better for lead?

I think it's hard to beat Hoppe's #9. Works, it's cheap, and it doesn't stink as bad as many others.

"pure turpentine" is about the best that you can use, I have bought every brand there is, the guys out West convinced me to use what they do
Its all that I now use in my Shiloh Sharps .40-65 and if these type rifle gets or holds lead in the barrel they just will not shoot, many times I will cork the crown of rifle and fill barrel with pure turpentine, when finished dry the barrel then oil
its available at any Lowe's
