Why would a company donate to both political parties equally(or close to equally). Sounds like they are just throwing money away. ...unless they are donating money for specific issues and not really on politics.

In many cases the are trying to influence specific issues that affect them. They hedge their bets in case their preferred side loses. Also, in many cases they are lobbying Congressional or federal committees that are comprised of a mix of both Democrats and Republicans, so they contribute some to everyone on the committee. It's all about influencing laws and regulations to help that organization or corporation be more successful. It's basically organized bribery, if you ask me.

Check out this list of the top all time donors from 1989 - 2012. You will see that some organizations make very one-sided donations, like labor unions and pro-choice groups such as Emily's List donating almost exclusively to Democrats and some corporations like Koch Industries and free market organizations like Club for Growth donating almost exclusively to Republicans. You can see why many liberals love to bash the Koch brothers and think they are evil men. If you look at the top 20 all time donors you will see that most of them are unions and big time Democrat donors. Don't get me started on unions...
