Have any of you that have built a custom rifle ever wish you would have just bought a high end rifle after the build. I was just curious, because some of the prices I have been told for custom builds are way up there. I hunt with some guys that have Gunwerks and although nice, Its hard to fathom that kind of money for a rifle. What are your guys opinions about custom rifles vs accurized factory rifles now. Just curious.

If I had the money, I'd go custom. If you ever wanted to sell it, it would bring more money. But it don't get much better than a worked over Remington 700. I know some guys are gonna shout savage but there is a reason why custom rifle makers use the 700 or 700 clones. The Army and Marine Corps still use 700's.

Love my 700. Sub 1inch groups all day. Good trigger job, floated barrel, and had muzzle recrowned. Hard to beat for $800.

I build my rifles for the enjoyment of building them and learning about gunsmithing. I probably get more enjoyment out of building them then I do shooting them. Here is my latest project. An M48 Mauser built into a 22-250. I have recontoured the stock to fit the action then refinished, turned the bolt, pillared and bedded the action, free floated the barrrel, preinstalled the barrel, installed the scope mount(not the scope I will use) and recontoured the trigger guard. I will end up with $600 in a rifle that I would be lucky to get $300 out of when finished but anybody can go buy one off the rack.

I lucked out and I have 3. Two I bought used one the guy needed the mony and got a real good one cheep, the scope alone was worth more than I paid for the whole thing. The next one wouldn't shoot what the guy wanted, I changed loads and got a nail driver. The 3rd I had a upper made to order for P-Dog shooting.

I am waiting on my stock to be deilvered for my first build. It was ordered in October, hopefully it will be here by the end of the month.

I have been buying parts over the last few months as money becomes avaliable.

The Surgeon action alone was around $1200.00.

This is my first custom rifle to have built, it is getting pricey! The verdict is out if ot will be worth it.

I love building and accurizing them too, as well as shooting them. I have never built one from scratch, but I really want to bad. That Surgeon is freaking sweet, man. I was wanting to build one for longer range for fun. But there are cheaper things to collect and play with, thats for sure.

I'm on the fence but two things about them.
One is most like wood stocks on them, if I spend that kind of money I ain't scratching it up in the woods, second is, I love my gun. I bought it off here from someone selling out when I first started hunting. Then I bought a great scope off Grizz. It's clunky and heavy BUT I can shoot with it. Killed to 400 yds.
Then I found a great deal in a higher end rifle( not a Kimber, which I wanted) that I hated to shoot( now K45 has it).
Two points, I'm not a sub whatever guy. I am confident in MY rifle and when it comes to kill shots good....
So I don't sit at the bench with my rifle and close it down to 1in groups.
Second is, I buy sell, trade guns all the time and I've yet to find one that is close to replacing mine, so again it would be hard for me to invest the money thinking I would always go back to MY gun...

That $600 is hard money, might even be more depending on what the bluing will cost me and still did not figure optics. Add in labor cost, so far I have done everything on the rifle myself including the barrel removal and install, bolt handle turn, scope base drill, lug lapping, action smoothing, trigger housing work and stock work. Probably have close to 50 hours in it so far I would guess and maybe another 10-20 to go. Even at minimum wage that would $400-500. Figure proffesional gunsmith rates and you could easily spend 1500-2000 on a custom build for a basic Mauser.
