Look at Costco.com They usually carry Canon and Nikon camera packages for killer deals. There are a few folks on here with Costco memberships if you'd like to get a package from them.

One reason I was talked off the Canon fence was because their SLR cameras "only" accept Canon lenses. If you get a Nikon, you can use non-Nikon lenses in their cameras. Without the name on it, you'll save a good bit of money.

+1 I have a Nikon D7000 and like it very well. Take a look at the D5100 model You should be able to get a good kit setup in your price range. If you want to spend a bit more you can get the new D5200, I have read some excellent reviews on them.

I have a t2i but they have a newer version out now called a t4i. They take some great pics, after you learn how to use them. You can always upgrade the lens and take truly professional pics.

My dad has a Lumix GH2 which is a very good DSLR, he loves it and it takes very impressive HD video as well as pics. I know it's not a canon but I thought I'd throw it out there. Not sure if it fits the $700 budget or not, unless you get a used or refurbished one.

Here's a package deal on a Sony Alpha you may want to consider. Has a $150 gift card coming back after the purchase, as well. Go check the reviews on Amazon; they're pretty high.

It's a special, so probably won't last long.
