I'm heading south to La. in the a.m. I usually take I55 from Memphis to Jackson Ms and cut over on I20. I wondering about going from Memphis to Greenville to Monroe La. Yahoo maps says to take 61. I've never been that way .Is it stop and go ?? or pretty much straight thru ??

It's been a while since I've made the drive, but I think it's a 6 vs. half-dozen comparison. 61 is 4-lane pretty much the whole way to Greenville with a few small towns to slow down through. I think the cut-over from I-55 is actually a little longer on time. Besides, it's pretty neat driving through the Delta, especially if you have some time to enjoy the ride.

Google maps shows it's actually about 50 miles longer to take I-55 to the Winona exit.

Personally, I'd take 55 to batesville. From batesville you could then take hwy 6 over to clarksdale and hit 61 or Take 6 and work down prior to clarksdale a couple different routes. Just too many small towns on 61 for me, 55 has no worries.
This way is a little longer vs 61 straight down, but better time can be made using 55, IMO.

Due to in laws living in Greenville, I drive it too many times. Take 55 south till new exit for Tunica. In Tunica take 61 straight to Greenville. Don't get caught speeding. Its about 3 hrs down there. An 18 mph over ticket will run you $277. Be sure to stop and have some Shipley doughnuts in Greenville. Something about the dirty water there makes me eat a whole box myself.

I love driving down 61 through the Delta. Greenville is the Hot Tamale capital of the world.

Back in the day 30 or so years ago, Doe's had the best tamales in the world. Don't know if they are still in business or are any good now.

Does is still there. Other good ones in Greenville are Hot Tamale Heaven, Fat Mama's and Scott's. Here a feature on Scott's: http://www.tamaletrail.com/OH_scotts.shtml
They have a Hot Tamale Festival there in October every year.
