Has anybody had any experience building or having a driveway bridge built on a property in Tn? I am looking at a property that only access is across a small creek. Currently they drive through creek at shallow spot with rock bottom. What kind of laws do I have to deal with and any idea of costs? Creek is only about 8-10 feet wide and 5 feet deep. Itís narrower at spots but the spot I like is that size. I would eventually plan to build so I would think the bridge would need to handle a loaded cement truck. Any help/ideas/experience would be greatly appreciated!

We had the same issue at the Cabin, had to drive through a shallow creek, if it was after a rain you were screwed. We ended up digging out and placing a culvert and covered it back up with dirt and gravel. No problems and it's been 15 years.

Laws? No laws really to speak of concerning driveways. If you're going to have a number of "not yours" vehicles driving over it, you may want to consult with a licensed contractor or a structural engineer. But the culvert option will probably be your best bet for an intermittent creek or drainage ditch.

I'd be willing to bet that corrugated metal pipe isn't overly expensive....especially in comparison to structural steel shapes. You can bank on something in the range of $3-$5 per pound of structural steel. Then you will have to figure a way to handle it.

Chaneylake built a fine bridge at the camp last summer. He's likely to chime in on this one anyway, but if you haven't heard anything in the next day or so, send him a PM. His is a series of longitudinal 12" pipes with a wood deck. It's pretty nice.

Thanks guys. If i get the farm it would only be my vehicles(or family/friends) crossing the bridge. With the exception of building a home.

I did notice when i walked the place it had an old metal h frame across one spot with a couple wood planks still on it. Looked like it hadnt been used for years. Path to it had grown up and everything but it is just about right where i would wanna have one.

I second the culvert. We had to have two across our creek.

At the first sign of beavers, get someone to trap them out. They can wreak havoc on culverts.
