In their weather-gasm report last night about all the atmospheric disruptions, the Weather Channel kept referring to this winter mess in the Southeast as "Euclid".

Is that how TWC classifies their own weathergasms, or is there a new (or rarely heard of) trend of naming non-tropical weather events?

Yea they decided to start doing it this year. Most everyone I know in the Meteorology community that does not work for The Weather channel thinks its kinda silly. What to name/what not to name? They have never said what the criteria for naming a storm is.
For instance our little Bilzzard in Northeast Arkansas is a major impact in Northeast Arkansas, but in the Northern plains, 10 inches of snow is no big deal.

I am wondering of they are going to name Spring Storm systems this year too.

...but as a side note, they aren't really in the weather forecasting business, they are in the entertainment business. They are good at it, just like FOX or CNN...only instead of talking about sex, politics, crime and drugs they talk about weather. Anything they can do to get folks talking about them (or starting Internet forum discussions ;\) ) is good for business right?

The biggest advantage I see is letting the public be able to see a weather system move across the USA... Probably a decent teaching tool.

So it's just TWC that does it then?

I can't wait for this April, when they run out of names.....

"LET'S TURN TO JIM CANTORE, ON THE GROUND IN CENTRAL ALABAMA, THE SITE OF OUR LATEST STORM 'ZAZU ZAZU, THE THIRD' FOR DAMAGE REPORTS."

Yea I can see that angle.

Although I am not sure the average person understands that the storm system that produced tornadoes last night on the Gulf Coast is the same storm system that dumped 15 inches of snow in Northeast Arkansas...and its the same storm system impacting the New England States today. maybe I'm wrong, and/or maybe naming will help teach people.

I think one of their reasons for doing it is so they can reference past storms by a name the way we do hurricanes instead of "the December 13th 2012" storm.

With no defined criteria to indicate a storm is worthy of a name, I can see it getting out of control especially if they start naming Spring storms too.

Anyone else notice the Weather Channel just inexplicably changed Winter Storm Hellen to Winter Storm Iago? Weird.

Makes no sense to name these things.

I see The Weather Channel as being on the exact same path as MTV.

In the beginning, MTV only played videos. Now you cant find one on there, ever.

In the beginning, TWC only broadcast the weather. Now every time I look at it; its some sort of programming.

I'll take Kirsten Horne in Knoxville for my weather updates.

The weathermen here in Nashville could name 90% of their storms Te'o's Gal. They never show up.
