I'm thinking about opening an outdoor shop. I'm wondering if there are any forum members who currently own one or have any experience with it. Any input is appreciated!

Great question! I'm still trying to figure that out. I really like the idea of either Tullahoma or Fayetteville. Some place that's not too far from Huntsville or Nashville, while being more than accessible to most of mid-Middle and southern-Middle Tennessee.

I'm not yet sold on that, though. I've been tossing around Lawrenceburg and Columbia, too.

Sell service. No way you can compete with the big big stores on price or selection.

That is all you need to know. If you want to make a million dollars, start with two.

columbia really dont have a good outdoor store. Dunhams really dont carry much down south. There stores in Michigan are a lot better. Ever since Great Outdoors closed down Columbia dont have very much. Lawrenceburg has Lawsons down the road that has about all of that county buisness. I alwayse thought they were priced way to high but I guess when you are out in b.f.e that is the only place people have. People down that way love them. Good luck in your quest though. Keep us posted

I had 2 friends who tried to have one in Fayetteville years back and it just did not work out. They said Walmart was the killer for them because Walmart could sell guns cheaper than in most cases they could buy them for. Simply because Walmart bought in such volume that they got a break on price. Like Bowriter said you would need to offer various services to offset the sales aspect. Now if Walmart quits selling guns and ammo then that could open up more opportunities. Godd Luck in your pursuit !

Amen, internet will kill you. You have to offer some sort of specialized service or forget it, even then it will be tough. You familiar with the Maryville/Knoxville area? If you're not I can tell you these are well populated areas where many sporting goods/hunting/fishing type shops have come and gone over the last 8 years or so. Big box stores and internet are tough to compete with - not impossible but tough. I worked for (2) different large (large for an independent business) sporting goods/hunting/fishing shops from 1998-2005 and both are now extinct. If you ever want to talk to a veteran business guru with 50+ years of experience under his belt who happened to be part owner in both of these operations PM me and I will give you his name and number.
