A friend was bitten and saw several quacks. None of them recognized the wound as a BR bite in spite of being told it possibly was. They all RX'ed meds and nothing helped. Finally, on the verge of losing his leg, he did his own research and presented his findings to another Doc.
This Doc immediately ordered hyperbaric (sp) chamber treatments and the leg was saved. After a long recovery the wound healed with a large portion of his calf missing, he walks with a limp.

i have heard that the brown recluses venon has negatively charged ions and if you zap it with a charge from a car battery it reverses the polarity and neutralizes it
maybe just an old wives tale or folk remedy but if i was facing surgery i think i would be willng to try it

I saw Dr. Joe Gannon cardiovert a guy one time on Medical Center with battery cables! \:D Don't know if I'd try that.

There is some treatment out there with hyperbaric chambers but I don't now anybody that has done that personally but maybe there is a "wound doctor" in Memphis that could help him out with that?
Good luck

Thanks for the responses. It just looks so nasty, I guess we expected a little more concern. Sounds like the hyperbaric chamber is a last ditch effort. This thing just continues to leak pus. It's disgusting to look at, and his hand is just continually throbbing.

Accurate diagnosis is crucial. Many MRSA infections mimic brown recluse bites or at least people are convinced they have a brown recluse bite when it is actually cellulitis caused by MRSA. Diagnosis is crucial because the treatment is different. A drug called Dapsone(which is also used to treat leprosy)is used to treat brown recluse bites. Antibiotics like sulfa and doxycycline are used to treat MRSA. Bottom line is that you need to see a doctor who knows what he is doing.

I'm not sure if his doctor knows what he was doing. It started on his thumb in two places, and distincly looked like an insect bite. A week later, it looks like it's about to fall off.
