Have any of you been treated for brown recluse bites? A guy I work with has one on his thumb, and the only thing his doctor has done was to prescribe antibiotics and let the swelling and decay take its course. Is this the typical treatment course for a brown recluse, or are there more aggressive treatments out there?

My neighbor got tagged by one last year on his hand. Same thing, antibiotics and let the rest run its course. His hand was HUGE,more than double its normal size. Today he has a slight scar where the bite was at and thats it.

My wife got a bite a few years ago and that is all they did. She was on 3 antibiotics I think. The area on her thigh is still darkened a little.

I got bit by one a few years ago on my left leg and almost lost my leg. Took stronge antibotics and a surgeon trimed away the rotting flesh a few times. Left a huge scar on my leg. It messed up the lymphatic system in my leg. Leg became very swollen and had to go see a physical therapist who treated it. She said it would have really helped with healing if they had put me in one of those oxygen chambers about the size of a coffin. She told me that the pure oxygen in those speeds up the healing process.

My brother was bitten on his bottom , just above where the leg connects, on his last day of being in the Army and it was one of the nastiest things I've ever see. He thought it was a boil or something, but because he couldn't see it, he asked me to look at it after a week after him getting worse and eventually not being able to walk. It was the size of a half dollar and looked like a volcano crater of this stringy goo-type of substance. Straight to the VA we went and within 6 hours he was in surgery getting a 1 1/2 inch deep by 4 inches across chunk taken out of his rear. Guess who got the pleasure of cleaning, repacking guaze 3 times a day for month—not him, he couldn't reach it!

oh man you must have felt so lucky

I dont care to be bitten because I don't want to find out whether or not they would cause a "crater" in my flesh or not. One time I did put a couple of live ones into a plastic bottle for observing... I think I just left em in the bottle after that...

take this for whats its worth
i have heard that the brown recluses venon has negatively charged ions and if you zap it with a charge from a car battery it reverses the polarity and neutralizes it
maybe just an old wives tale or folk remedy but if i was facing surgery i think i would be willng to try it
