Just finished this today. I have one fawn head in the woods behind the house, if a critter doesn't drag it off I will take the jaws from it as well so I have a 0.5-year old jawbone to add to the collection. These are mainly for aging purposes, so I can study them and get better at aging jawbones along with advice from experienced people and the internet...

The youngest is 1.5 years old, from a jaw I picked up by the side of the road. The oldest is 5.5 from the one-horn buck I killed in early November. 5 of them are my own kills. 3 of them are pick-ups, one of which being the 1.5 year old doe by the road, another being from a 4.5 year old doe (I have the intact skull too) and the third (the most stained from soil) being from the 4.5+ year old freak nasty buck skull I picked up in 2010.

Does anybody else keep a few jawbones just for show or for reference when aging deer?

Congrats...... Let me say that in the end, that deer hunting isn't about jaw bones or antlers...... We will all be sitting on a bucket next to a road hunting deer if we are lucky enough.

The only reason I bring this point up was, once I drove by a man in the middle of the dark and he looked to be in his 80's. He was sitting on the side of the road on a bucket. My first thought was, how would he kill something right there??? Than I thought, I hope I'm lucky enought to do the same.

I have never collected jaw bones but I have collected a few antlers. The point I'm trying to make is that it doesn't matter what you collect, just enjoy, wake up every morning you can and hunt.

Good luck and Congrats on a great season.

Thanks gnb. Oh and I am not hunting for jawbones. I just find it fascinating aging deer this way and I decided to reconstruct a few jaws within the past few days in my spare time. Gives me something deer related to do in the gap between deer season and shed hunting \:D

I understand... Just wanted to give the big picture since you are a yong ladie. I remember meeting you when you found your first horns. All of them will make memories.

the skull I brought to the vous? Sure wont forget finding that. You're right everything I take home from the woods makes good memories, nothing beats the outdoors.
