I'm fixing to buy my first digital trail cam and I need to know how you get the pics off the card, meaning do you just buy a spare card and swap them out each time or what?
Thanks

I always have two cards for each camera, so I can walk up and just swap cards.

Once you get the exposed card home you will need some way to transfer the pictures to your PC. Most newer PCs have memory card slots built in, but if your PC doesn't have these you can buy a universal card reader (attaches to PC with a USB connection) from WalMart for about $25.

Ok, thanks. I already have a card reader for my PC. I just wasn't sure about getting 2 cards per cam, makes sense.

Thanks again!

Definitely the way to do it. Then you never have to leave the area uncovered (w/no camera) while you are checking what is on the card.

Man, there's no way I would take an expensive laptop bouncing around on my ATV as I check cameras. Memory cards are incredibly cheap these days.

I recommend 3 cards per cam, although one of the 3 can be a much smaller-memory card. Like BSK says, the card prices are really down from just a year ago, when they were really down from the year before.

Most of my cards are 512's and 250's. It's nice to check one after a couple weeks (exchange the card), but then sometimes it's oppertune to check it again in a couple days later (exchange the card), which is where that 3rd card can come in handy when you haven't taken time to review/delete the first one.

It can be very time-consumptive to review the pics, and I don't like to delete the card pics until after I've both stored and reviewed them on my computer, as sometimes I've been too quick to delete a pic before realizing what was in its background, especially if you take the time to "lighten up" the nighttime pics with photo-editing software.

But sometimes when in the field if I find very few pics on a cam card, I'll just continue using that same card. If you have a regular digital camara that uses the same card as your trail cams, this is a convenient way to get a field glimpse of what's on a card. (You have to use each card to take a pic in your regular digital cam before it will read pics taken with another cam, and this doesn't work with all cams.) You can also get a battery-operated Leaf River mult-card reader with field viewing screen, but they cost more than some cams (@ $150).
