What are they good for? What call/bird are they calling or trying to act like? Do they serve a good purpose?

almost anything, yelps, clucks, cutting, purrs, kee kee, some people can even gobble on them.

In my opinion they make the most realistic turkey sounds. They are very good for working a turkey in close when you need to have the gun up and ready.
Turkeys in close can see movement very well so working a box or slate can get you busted.
They do take a lot more practice to get good at but it is worth it and they can make just about any sound a turkey can.
