Anyone ever taken a wide open field and planted pines? I was thinking maybe making a field with a plus sign basically as shooting lanes about 20 yards wide and putting a shooting house right in the middle. Or hunting the woods around it and just planting the whole field in pines.

Which would work best?

Which type of pines offer the most cover while also growing the fastest?

Thanks guys!

I plant loblolly pines for cover strips. They grow fast, and will get as thick as you want them, depending on the spacing.

What size field are you talking about?

I worked a farm where we planted these on a 12 x12 grid and within 3 years they were 10 to 15 ft tall. Guess that will depend of soil. And when they get big enough you can cut every other tree. I suggest tubing them until they get 4 to 5 ft tall.

Depends on what size field works best, we have many fields ranging in different sizes. I was thinking either a 5 or 10 acre field probably. What's the running price of loblolly?

Saplings you should be able to get for a buck a piece or so depending on how many you get. Tubes are a must though and there about 3 bucks a piece but well worth the $, without it most will get eatin up before they have a chance to get off the ground and will protect them deer from rubbing them. We learned the hard way. There may even be a program to get them discounted through CRP. Now till the end of February is the time to get them in the ground.

You can gen them cheap through Tennessee Division of Forestry. I think I got 2500 for a couple hundred dollars last year. You can get tubes from forestry suppliers. The type of tube determines the price.

I like it for hunting in SC... Lots of briars when they are young but lots of cover also. I hunted several planted pine lots. Saw and shot a ton of them in there. They bed up in them a lot also.

We are currently under the CRP program so I would definitely look into the discount for tube.

What is the best website you all have found as far as price and customer service/delivery?

Would June be to late to plant, I coach high school baseball so right now is horrible timing for me to plant.

Also would I have to water these often? Tough for me living out of state.

Not sure about a good site, but the window is only till end of February. Water shouldnt be an issue. But I suggest getting the fertilizer tablet to drop inside each tube..... they look like a huge vitamin \:\)
