I know a lady who carries a .45...and I know women who are squeamish about shooting a .22. Best thing to do is go to some ranges (each range may have something different to try) and try some out. She'll "know" which gun she likes.
Moondawg said it, smaller caliber and keep it as simple as possible for her.
