Seeing how I'm not familiar with the regs regarding traps I thought I would ask before losing my cool.
This afternoon while working a piece of grouse cover I noticed my dog slowed up and was checking something out cautiously. Not knowing what he was in, and always watching for suspicious behavior I whistled him off it. When I walked up there was a large trap, not a leg hold trap but a trap the diameter of a trash can lid. No tag on it, and nothing to indicate its presence until we were on it. Over the next mile I found several others some smaller leg hold type with no padding at all.
My question is what are the regs? It seems crappy that these are scattered around and the big trap could easily kill a bird dog, while the smaller ones would probably break a leg. I'm all for every one having a chance to do what they love, but dang it sure is a little scary having this stuff all over with zero warning or indication it was there.
I was on public land btw

Illegal traps without a name, and one that size most likely illegal even if tagged. Hope you will report them.

Sounds like he is describing a conibear trap Steve, if tagged, it would have been legal if it is a conibear. I would be curious to see photos of the setups.

All of the traps without padding set on top off the ground are illegal as well.

The legal maximum size conibears are 16" if square and 12" round. It WOULD NOT be legal unless it was in a water set or set at least 12" back in a hole.
It sounds like the whole trap line is illegal.

I can get pics later tonight and have GPS coords as well. I will call it in now.
What good does it do to have them tagged? Dogs won't notice tags and I may or may not see a tag. If I stepped in one of these traps t would break my leg, and I would murder the trapper when he came to check hs traps.
What happened today concerned me more tan anything I have ever encountered in the outdoors. What I saw is not safe whatsoever for humans or dogs.

The traps that are legal for above ground sets would no doubt scare your dogs, but they would not harm it. I have put my hands in them many times during demonstrations. It sound like someone had a bunch of illegal traps set out. The regular steel jaw long spring and coil spring traps can be bad news for a dog.
I have released many animals from the rubber jawed traps, and other then them being a little testy, they were fine. If the person is doing it legally, they would have had them tagged.

Normally I would but if they were legal I didn't want to be the jerk messing with a lawful persons gear. It is called in now, and will hopefully be handled shortly

Id sure like to see a picture of the trap as big as a garbage can.. sounds like a bear trap.. probably worth hundreds if not thousands of dollars.. its people like him that give all the legal trappers a bad name.. glad your dog didnt get into the big one..

Bear traps, good ones at least, (Duke makes several models), run between $200 and $300 new.
