What is legal to squirrel hunt with? Are BB's okay or does it have to be pellets of some sort?

Thanks Steve. You're the best!. I would have hated to get a ticket over a bb and lose my new toy. :-).

Interesting thought.
I would think the pellets would be better for hunting, anyway.

i started this earlier today wondering if bb's would be considered fmj. Interesting thought. I would think the pellets would be better for hunting, anyway. pellets are more accurate but bbs penetrate better.... I've killed my share with both pellets and bbs, and they both do the job. My most recent air gun kills were with bbs including one lung shot and a couple neck shots. Gun shoots 800 fps give or take if I remember correctly.

match grade bb's are much more accurate than pellets in my daisy.

The booklet says mi e shoots 1000 fps. I reckon that is good. I also have to decide on whether or not to use the scope.

for what its worth I shot the same squirrel 6 times with a .177 pellet and he got away pretty unharmed. I'd suggest finding a .22 pellet rifle if you dont already have one.

I'd suggest finding a .22 pellet rifle if you dont already have one. only time it took me more than 2 shots was on a squirrel in pennsylvania and I assume they are thicker to tolerate the colder winters. Also fox squirrels are bigger and tougher and I have had them run off when I knew the bb/pellet had hit them.
it's not the caliber as much as the FPS your gun shoots... you probably had no penetration on that squirrel

There are several reasons not to use BB's for hunting.
1.Steel BB's are not very efficient for hunting. A standard BB weighs only 5.1 grains and even if your gun was shooting that BB at 1000 fps your FPE ( foot pounds of energy) at the muzzle would be 11.32 fpe.
The standard fpe recommended for small game is 12 fpe. Not to mention that a steel BB does not expand when it hits, it would be like shooting a deer with a field point target arrow. A field point would sure kill a deer if you hit it in the brain or vitals, but not humanely.
2. Accuracy... BB guns are definitely not known for accuracy, this should also factor in to your decision to use it for hunting. If you can hit a quarter ( the size of a squirrels vitals)every other time at 20-30 yds by all means hunt away.

As lacking as my shooting skills have become, it is more cost efficient for me to use the pellet gun instead of the 22. I am hoping this one is as accurate as stik's old daisy. That think was incredibly accurate. :).

My dad has a gamo that shoots 1000 fps with lead pellets and 1200 with the gamo pba ammo. My mom killed a groundhog with it last year in her garden. Ot is deadly on squirrels. I zeroed it in for them at 25 yards and it shot through 1/4" plywood with the pba ammo.

I had enough gift card for the Ruger.
