My friend's dad had a friend tell him that in Unit L you can kill 3 antlerless deer and one buck in one day. I told him he was crazy. The limit in the book says 3 deer per day. I feel stupid asking this question but he wants me to ask. Who is wrong in this instance? TIA

Your friend's dad's friend is correct.
I am not TWRA though.

If you haven't reached your seasonal buck bag limit, you are allowed one buck/day up to the season limit of 3.
If you participate in the Special Season Unit L antlerles hunt requiring a type 94 permit or Annual/Lifetime Sportsmans license you may kill 3 does/day.
In Unit L you could kill 4 deer in one day during the G/M/A season.

Hardin County (L) we have a 3-day a doe limit here. Needless to say we are way over populated with doe. Now this will upset a few BUT is there under consideration any thought to “doe first” before you can take a buck? A few states already do this in order to help control the over abundance in their regions. Every “true” white tail hunter I have addressed with the thought agrees.

It has been talked about and rejected. With TN's check in system it would be almost impossible to enforce and thermal imaging data shows virtually no need for such a regulation on any countywide basis.
