686 but probably only due to my association with an old gunsmith who can make the triggers on those 686's slick as a whistle. I've owned several 586/686's and always liked the way they shot. Never had a GP100 however the ruger wheel guns ive owned did not have favorable triggers and I've not been associated with anyone who dealt with making the trigger better

I bought the GP 100 during the summer and love it. It was 140 bucks less than the S&W and $22.00 more than the used 686 the dealer had. My only choice was between the Ruger and the XD45. That'll come soon enough though.

i prefer the s&w over ruger becuse of the trigger few gunsmiths will touch the ruger trigger

GP100..just because I love the way it looks and feels.I've not shot one,so I can't give my opinion there...Im in the process of saving for a GP100 right now..

Smith for better trigger, smoother action, and a better over all feel. For a durable, hefty revolver, the Ruger.

Tough decision. I'd say you can't go wrong with either one, as both are nice guns.
I'd probably go with the Ruger GP100, mainly because I like my Ruger SP101. I've never shot the GP100, but I'm sure it'd be just as good, if not better.
Having said that, I have shot the 686 MANY years ago. From what I remember, it was a good gun. I wouldn't be opposed to getting one.
