That is likely the perception Bow'd however, I'd bet his intent was not to initiate or really even provoke but rather, he felt provoked and reacted ignorantly - kneejerked without thinking about the consequences. Without words, our nation is saying a lot - in terms of double/triple prices paid for guns/ammo.. so silently, there's a lot said if reading between the lines.
Either way, real stupid on his part and as you said, it sure did nothing in regards to helping anyone appreciate law abiding gun owners
