They are both great trails. I have hiked both of them. When you go up Alum Cave trail you will hike across the slides that can be seen from the road. There are cables to hold onto when crossing the slide if she is scared of heights. While beautiful views can be seen when crossing this, I did not like walking along the dropoff. Will ya'll be spending the night at the lodge?

Gramps we will be spending the night, I think its 15 miles round trip IIRC. How long did it take going up? Im guessing 5 hours. We are really looking forward to it. I was told that the Alum Cave trail was rough because of the ice , but I imagine its all that way. Ive got a little over 3 months to get this fat body in shape LOL

Don't remember how long the hike was as it has been a few years. There was no ice because I hiked it in July. I know a couple that have hiked it when there was ice on the trail and they wore cramptons on their boots for better traction.

I've hiked the Alum cave trail, as I recall it's 5 miles up there. If you go during cold weather ,watch for huge ice sickle spears that sometimes fall onto the trail from the rock overhangs. I recommend starting early in the morning so that you get back way before dark.
