Had a conversation with a guy today about the old long barreled goose guns & long toms of years past, told him I had a few but to be honest I didnt think they were all that great & didnt actually shoot any better than the average shot gun, told him I think the guns we have now days shoot far better.
I had an old marlin bolt action & a old 10 ga, the Marlin was ok but not the gun that legends are made of, the 10 ga was probably the most useless shot gun Ive ever shot, a kid with a hand full of gravle could throw a better patteren.
So whats your experience with them ,were they all that great or is it just nostalgia ?

I have a 10 gauge double with 32 inch full/full barrels. It patterns well with #4's but a load of #2's is it's favorite. You would not want to be within 60 yards of that gun when it is loaded with #2 shot.

all the powder is burnt in the 1st 24-26 inches. anything over that and you are losing velocity in the barrel.

I read that some where, & I'll Xs2 the comment about the choke.
Seen some pics in a magazine last year pertaining to crow hunting & the guns had some serious long barrels, probably twice as long as a standard barrel, think'n it siad something about them being basicly a barrel extention th screws into the choke threads.

Those are called "Metro" barrels its more of a sound reducer more than a long range killer. Factory shotshell ammo 2.75" burns all powder around the 24.5" mark beyond that is just wasted.
