I've looked at a primos power dog but after reading mixed reviews about them I'm scared to buy one. What would be a good e caller to start out with? I know fox pro makes good ones but they seem to want an arm And a leg for most of them.

Foxpro and wildlife tech are two of the best. The best sounds of any and I've had a few of them!!! The cheap ones will work but quality hardware gives you better sound!!
