Just curious question. I have several planted but aren't producing yet. I have heard that deer and turkeys eat them but I wanted to hear some of your thoughts on it as well. They are of the red oak family and I hear that deer always eat whites before reds, just wanting your observations on it. Thanks.

The sawtooth is a native of Asia, so it can't really be classified as a red oak.
Deer are highly attracted to sawtooth oak acorns, but primarily because they are the first acorns to fall. Sawtooths in TN usually drop acorns in early to mid-September, while other native species generally produce a few weeks later.

Yep,and it sounds like they are eating/crunching ice while they are eating them, great for most of bow season, depending on age of tree.

Absolutely yes! Purchased a small farm this past year that has 3 groves of sawtooths with about 25 trees per grove. They were 7 years old this year and I was told this is the first year they produced. Most of the trees had several acorns and they were eaten about as fast as they dropped. Sat in stand near them right before the first juvenile rifle hunt one evening and watched a buck and 3 does move through them chomping away! Mine will get fertilized a couple times this year.

Be careful, fertilizing too much or too late in year can cause them to drop the acorns early

Mine are gone as soon as they hit the ground also. You'd be lucky to find one!
