I want to start a few things from seeds but was looking for info on what all I can start planting early. I got a few lights, so I can start in doors too. Thanks.

I was wondering the same thing. I just moved from Louisiana and normally I would have already put my first tomato seeds in pots by now.

Purely guessing - I was thinking mid/late February to be ready to put in the ground at the end of March. I realize we aren't safe from frost yet, but I like to get the fruit as soon as I can rather than having to wait an extra month. If I loose my first plants then its no biggie.

I'd love to hear what others say.

Planting dates depend of last frost date in your part of the state. I live in Carters Valley area of Hawkins County and we sometimes have frost up until May 15. First year I lived here, wife and I planted in late April and lost our entire garden due to a heavy frost in early May. \:\(

I usually try to plant around the first of May. I don't like to take chances with late cold snaps that can happen in Tennessee. If you want to plant early, then go for it.....you might just get lucky with our crazy weather patterns.

I think I will go ahead and start some maters. Like BSV said, this way I can afford to lose the first wave. What's everybodies favorite tomato?

6 weeks, give or take, before average last frost for tomatoes, 6 to 8 weeks for hot peppers. Depends on how developed you want the seedlings when you plant them out, you can start a little sooner or later if you like. Hot peppers take longer to germinate and grow so it helps to start them earlier. I start all my tomato, pepper and eggplants around late February to early march under 4' shop lights with cool white "daylight" fluorescent tubes. Start in jiffy mix (no fertilizer) in plastic or styrofoam egg trays and when the true leaves come out from between the seed leaves, transplant the best seedling to 16oz Dixie cups with regular miracle gro potting mix. Only water when top of potting mix is dry, don't over water, and don't let them wilt.

I'm partial to the open pollinated tomatoes(heirlooms). My favorites are Kellogg's Breakfast, German Red Strawberry, Giant Belgium, and Delicious.

Will probably be starting seeds in late February or early March.

As a general rule the last frost date in TN is April 15th.
