Hi All,

I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to everyone for all of your help. This has been my first year hunting, and I will admit that the average hunter has not exactly been warm and inviting when it comes to sharing their tips and locations. A few folks on this site showed tremendous patience and generosity while answering what I now, with some perspective, realize were really stupid questions. Without those answers, I probably would have just stayed home.

I am happy to report that with everyone's help, I have accomplished my hunting goals for the year. I shot my first dove, turkey, deer and duck all within a year of deciding that I wanted to learn to hunt. That being said, here were some of my more humorous (in retrospect) lessons learned:

- Trying to stalk turkeys is not very productive
- You don't need to be in the stand 3 hours before sunrise to deer hunt
- Dove don't normally fly over just any random field on just any random day during the season
- Shooting 3 1/2" BB's at geese directly over your head is not something you want to do a lot if you value your ability to move your arm
- Shooting the sky with target shells at a skeet range is substantially cheaper, and less demoralizing, than with 3" steel shot from a blind
- After hiking 2 miles through the woods carrying a shotgun and a turkey, the usefulness of a sling becomes quite apparent
- 25 degrees when you are walking to your car is a very different thing than 25 degrees sitting outside on the ground for 5 hours. Those two scenarios require very different socks.

This forum really does have the nicest folks on the web and to anyone getting started, here is the best advice I ever received:

- Find a hunting buddy. Hunting alone has its place, but it is more fun and easier to learn when you have someone who is willing to go out there with you.
- Failing is to be expected. That is why it is called hunting and not killing. If you are only in it to shoot stuff and you don't enjoy the whole experience, then it isn't for you.
- If you have any questions, ask the TWRA guys (preferably before you decide to shoot that bald eagle ;\) ). I was amazed by the lengths that the folks at Cheatham and online went to to help me get my start.

And if you are an experienced hunter upset about all the new hunters acting out of sorts and ruining your sport, take a few minutes to point them in the right direction. Some of us really are just classless, terrible people, but others of us are acting out of ignorance and genuinely interested in learning and doing things the right way!

Thanks again for all the advice this past year and I hope to one day pass along what I've learned here!

I rarely read long posts, glad I read yours. Good people are good people regardless of the sport and there are many good people on tndeer. Sounds like you are on your way now so welcome to the brotherhood (cheesy, but just had to be said haha)

Agreed. Welcome aboard. 99% of the people on this site had a mentor of some sort show them and teach them to hunt. You defintiely pick up a lot as you go but someone needs to help you get started. Don't ever be afraid to ask questions. We might pick at you a little but you will, in the end, get your answer. \:D
