Yeah, a lot if information is breaking on this topic matter and many of the facts point to debunking much of what we've been taught in the last 50 years.
I'm always surprised when I see people using margarin etc because its tastes like crap.
The research really suggests that if you drop the vegetable oils in favor of natural, saturated fats, cholesterol levels drop. Our brains are made up of primarily saturated fat and cholesterol. A diet that deprives your brain of its raw essentials, can effect mental performance. Also, some studies conclude that saturated fat is the preferred energy source of your cardiovascular system.

What "season" is for butter? Or do they just sell it more often at certain holidays or something?
That's new to me.
There's an Aldi in Bartlett, so that might be a great option for me. I'm pretty sure that the guy at work who sent me that link eats that stuff all the time. He even uses it in his coffee in lieu of creamer. I think a lot of the principles he's following are based on stuff he's read either from the "paleo" type diet or a site called http://www.bulletproofexec.com

Aldi just rotates their specialty stock. I think stuff like Kerrygold and Dubliner can be found around Christmas and Thanksgiving.
Aldi is a pretty cool store if you're not hell bent on namebrand stuff. It's pretty obvious which ittems they sell that originated in a name brand factory. Milk & eggs are always great buys, and everytime I do poppers, I get Aldi bacon. Canned goods a reliable buy there, and it can be fun just cruising through to see what all they have.
Avoid the deli meat. It's not very good.
A couple summers ago, they had some heavy-weight insulated Muck boot knockoffs on sale for $30/pair.

I heard a heart doctor last year talk about how they have been wrong over the last 20 years with the low fat diets. He said it isn't the fat that causes high cholesterol It's the processed foods. It is equivalent to taking sand paper and rubbing on your arm. Processed foods irritate your arteries and cause swelling which in turn causes blockages. He said to avoid any processed foods including margarine.
Stick to Butter!
I have since I heard him. It made sense to me.

Simple way to try Hatcher's butter and make it yourself is to buy their whole milk and take the cream off the top and turn it into butter. You won't have whole milk anymore, maybe 2%, but you can make your own butter.
Once my kids had Hatcher's choc milk, it took me 6 months to get them off.

I particularly like Aldi's produce, but I've found you have to get there early in the morning to avoid finding just picked over bins. Oh, I'm very fond on the quarter in the cart deal too!  Crosshairy - thanks for the link to the butter story...the link to the Weston A. Price Foundation proved beneficial as well. I've got a ton of reading to do now.

We are starting to shift away from some of these nasty foods this year. It's tough to give up when you are busy and have small kids, but I'm sick of being so tired all the time and feeling like my entire family is coming down with some new disease.

I second that. Its nothing fancy, but we buy a lot of stuff there. Milk, Cereal, bread, flour, eggs...mostly the "stock the cabinet essentials" are 1/3 price of Kroger.

I never even thought about making my own butter. Its amazing how many things that were once such a common(necessary) kitchen task are virtually non existent today.

Years ago our washing machine had a mini tub for very small loads. We'd fill it with cream and turn it on. In a few minutes we'd have our butter churned.

my wife make our butter. its as good as any u can buy. its also not any cheeper to make it. but the satisfaction that she makes it. and it only takes a few minutes to make.

If you want a full-on mind blow, try this stuff:  It's higher than giraffe balls at the grocery store, but Costco will oftentimes carry it in a big tub for the price of the small batch at Kroger. It tastes the way butter is supposed to taste. Oh, and even when cold, it spreads on bread easily

I've recently been reading pretty much the same info. Next time I go to Huntington I plan to stop at a place on Highway 70 with a sign Homemade Butter and fresh eggs. Has anyone on here tried their butter ??

I made some butter a week or so ago after reading this thread....just to say I have done it. I started with 2 quarts of fresh cream from Fresh Market. Ended up with a little over a pound of butter. Its good, but not economical and not really much different from regular store bought butter. It took a lot longer than I thought it would to separate. We also used the buttermilk for pancakes, they were exceptionally good.

I would.....in light of recent research about animal fats, I wouldn't have any hesitation giving up skim in favor of 2% or even whole.

Read about "somatic cell count" and milk, and you'll see what I mean. It's pretty nasty. "Somatic cells" are basically a scientific name for "pus".
I haven't done any research on the organic milk from Kroger that we buy pretty regularly. Not sure how much benefit I'm getting for the extra $2 or so a gallon.

I would guess very little. I think organic at an industrial level is a crap shot. There's little oversight and the standards are so loose that there really is no standard.
Most of the organic milk sold in big-box-stores is produced by the same companies who produce the nonorganic brands.
Best bet would be to buy direct from a local dairy, pasteurized or raw. We have two family dairies here in Nashville that offer pasteurized milk. But, I don't know about Memphis.

I'm a Hatcher's fan (natural not organic), but I do pick up JD's Country milk from time to time. JD's is out of KY, but they do come into Nashville.
