Anyone have any experience about planting pecan trees (the Desirable and Stuart varieties)? I'm planting to set out a few in the next few weeks and am wide open to lessons learned and/or recommendations.

The price of pecans is just plain nuts (pardon the pun). These are for us to eat vs the wildlife...though I'm sure the squirrels will get their share.

We have stuarts on my family's land in Louisiana and they produce loads of pecans every other year. I have heard of people trying to grow them up here but have been told that they rarely produce.

My father has papershell and Missouri I think.. and it took 20 years for them to produce, but they are loded every year now. This is in Wilson Co. Squirrels love the pecans but they hate my air rifle. I remember when I was a kid jumping over them and accidentally hitting one with the lawn mower. They are well over 40' now.
