So out of all the deer hunters here, who turkey hunts here?
I counted 98 turkey in a field last weekend, the most I've ever seen in one field.
Seeing all those turkey got me pumped about turkey this spring!

I act like I do...go sit in a barn with a decoy named Bertha and drink coffee in my camo. I've knocked some mud on a couple but only got one with my bow a few years back.

I usually get pumped up about going but then never get out there. If the weather is nice I'd rather be golfing. I might try and get out a few times this year though. I've just found that turkey are pretty easy to hunt. For one I can hear where they are and I've been able to walk right up on them and could easily bust a few. I've never called them in. Any advice on starting out?

Love both, but as far as a hunt, it's gotta be turkeys. I'm a run and gun type guy, so more physical than deer hunting. Love the strategy, more like a game I'm trying to win.

I go when I can, but fishing is number 1 priority in the spring. Actually it is number 1 priority as soon as deer season closes. I like turkey hunting but fish a lot of tournaments in the spring so I don't get to go much.

me and my father loved using owl calls as a locater call for turkeys, right before daylight,we always usually got well within a easy range of where they would roost. It was alot of fun up north when I was a kid,but I have not been in about eight years now,and hope to be going again this spring and getting back into it,cause it's been far to long, lol

I see all kinds of turkeys during deer season. I always tell myself that I'm going to try hunting them in the spring then I never do. None of my buddies turkey hunt. I guess I need to find me someone that knows what their doing to follow!

Turkeys are the reason I started hunting....
I love shooting em in the head with a 12 gauge! And hearing em gobble on the roost... and gobble on the ground, and gobble so close you can hear it rumble.

I love the sound of a gobbler in the morning. Especially when he is close enough to hear him spitting and druming.

I just love the excitement of the chase. Kind of like a game of chess...you go here, they go there, you go there...they go quiet! LOL...I love it. Especially the weeks leading up to the season of getting up early listening to try and find where they are roosting

I could care less about those big, noisy acorn and seeding-eating feathered rats. What more reason do you need to kill them? Besides them being a great challenge and lots of fun to hunt, they are some of the best meat you will ever eat! BSK's brain is 98% full of information about whitetail deer. If he attempts to fill it with info about how awesome the wild turkey is, he would write-over some of the deer info. So he is left thinking that turkeys are the same as rats.

Here here! At least for the first 2 or 3 weeks. Problem is, while I'm hunting, I will find a rub line or scrapes or some other type of deer sign and start looking for new possible trees to hang stands

My number 1 obsession. Playing the game, the chess match, the gobbling and strutting, sharing hunts with buddies. How can sitting in a tree waiting on a deer to walk by compare? When I am deer hunting I get more excited about scratching or feathers, or dust bowls, or seeing turkeys than anything deer related.

Im the same way. I kinda like take turkey surveys when deer hunting. Deer hunting is almost like killing time waiting for turkey season.

Not when there's 10 of them roosted in trees around me when I'm trying to deer hunt. And then when they come crashing down off their roosts like a truck-full of bowling balls... Geesh, those are some noisy animals!

I guess that's why they make chocolate and vanilla. It is beyond the scope of my imagination how someone could prefer sitting in a tree waiting on a deer to walk by over all the interactive parts of turkey hunting. Not to mention the gobbling and strutting and actually sharing hunts with friends and family!

I understand that. I am an avid fisherman too. I take all my vacation in April and typically hunt in the morning and fish in the evenings. I have killed turkeys in the evening but I just prefer turkey hunting in the morning. And a fish will bite any time.

I'm more of a turkey hunter than a deer hunter! Turkey hunting is much more exciting than deer hunting. Since I played football through college, I never had much time to deer hunt.
Turkey hunting has helped me better understand our property and how both deer and turkey use it. When chasing turkeys, I constantly find myself using the same trails and terrain the deer use. I also find deer sign that I otherwise would not have.

I do this exact same thing stik. In the spring, we take the boat to our cabin. Hunt when the hunting is good and fish when the hunting is bad. Also vice versa when the fishing is good. It usually works out pretty good. Fish one morning and hunt the next. Plus when you get off the lake around noon, that leaves plenty of time for an afternoon hunt. I like fishing more than turkey hunting

I turkey hunt also. Didn't do as much as I wanted last year but hope to do more this year. I enjoy deer hunting more and not much on late season turkey hunting. Too hot, thick, and too many bugs and snakes on the back end of the season for me.

Absolutely true. "To each his own."
I actually do share all my deer hunting with friends and family. I almost never hunt alone. We each are in our own treestands, but we hunt the same place on the same days, communicate during the hunt via 2-way radio, and then share deer camp between hunts.
But your also right about liking different types of hunting. I have no interest at all in trying to "call" or "attract" deer to me. I get my thrills from figuring them out and beating them at their own game (ambush hunting along their normal travels).

I absolutely love to turkey hunt but haven't hunted since I lost my turkey hunting spot a few years back. I love the interaction part with both deer and turkey. I have lots of calls and am not bashful about using them on either. The turkey hunting can be more of a chess match than the deer hunting.

JC You ever get that pond filled back in?
One of them is full. The other still isn't holding good since the dam broke a couple years ago. We were talking about going another 75 yards down the hollow and making a big dam while taking out the one on the "new" pond. This would create one small pond and one that's about 2 acres.
You need to make another trip down there soon

Back when I was tournament fishing I just couldn't see what all the fuss about some big dumb bird was... dang-it, then I went turkey hunting... so much for the spring tournaments...

So I'm looking to get a new turkey gun but I want to only spend around $400. I'm looking at the Mossberg 535 turkey/waterfowl combo for $399. But for $50 more I can get the Beneli Nove for $449. The Mossberg comes with a 24 in turkey barrel and a 28 duck barrel. The Nova come with a 26 in barrel. Both are camouflage. What do u y'all think?

Count me in for turkey! Next to “that” big old buck one of the most, if not the most, challenging game to hunt. Not sure about other counties but here in Hardin gobblers everywhere and in large numbers. No exaggeration here, too many white tail hunters can verify. I have personally counted flocks of 50+ numerous times, once loosing count over 100! One hunter on adjacent lease dropped by and stated he and friend counted 200 the afternoon before. I had a guest hunter from Knoxville in over deer season he was amazed as we watch 50+ mill about a cut bean field. Took one during archery season myself. How many times I have been in stand and have a turkey “train” noisily scratch by. Glad turkey can’t “smell” (ha). A couple of months from now I’ll be wondering where did they all go! As a member of the White Tail “SLAM” welcome hunt swaps, would enjoy swapping hunts in other areas of our state. Send a note: frankgtennessee@aol.com

I love deer hunting and just started turkey hunting five years ago. If you are a hunter and/or appreciate the taste of wild game, you really need to learn to hunt turkey. It can be fun and challenging. Seeing 40 of them together in a field and getting a tom to come to you is easier said than done.
