Now that we ran out of season, is anyone heading to AL on a hunt? Guided? Public land? Leases?

I have never been able to get away from work to hunt the AL Jan rut, but I sure hope to some day. I spent some time hunting in Jackson county some years ago and I really enjoyed that. Also hunted south AL many years ago in late December but the rut had not started.

I'll be heading down each of the remaining weekends. As of now, I'll be hunting all public land. I've already taken a buck on some private land we have down there back in December, but I'm backing off of it. I've never hunted public land before, so I'm pumped.

Their season closes January 31st. The all game, all year, non-resident license is almost $300.00, but it's a little easier to swallow the price for a few days of hunting. If you know you'll only have a few days to go, that might be a better option.

I'm down there so much all year long that I go ahead and spend the money on an all year one, but that's the only state I do that for.

I'm heading out tomorrow sometime for five days. Unguided on private land. But with the forecast for warm weather, I'll probably do as much fishing as hunting. I need to kill 3 does for some folks here but that won't take long. I'm thinking pre-spawn bass in the 5-8 pound range.

I haven't hunted in the over three weeks, I guess I can still shoot. I was thinking yesterday, I haven't missed in three years, gun or bow, probably be my luck to blow a shot on a big one.

Well, ON the land I hunt, there's really no pressure, but AROUND it there's been some. I hunt in NW AL. My best scouting day down there, I saw 21 does and two bucks. I took a nice one the week before Christmas. It's my father-in-law's property, and there's a decent span of time between my wife and her brother. She's 31 and he's 18. Anyway, I'm teaching him a lot, and I told him I'd be sure that he got the next buck off the land, so now the pressure is way down because he doesn't get to hunt it but once every week or two (he's busy doing 18 year old things when I'm not down there, ha!).

I'll be hunting public land the rest of the month, and there's a lot of pressure there, typically. The guys I talk to apparently don't know how to let a buck walk, so there are some monsters out there, but those dudes aren't going to find them. I'm going after a couple 160s this weekend in Colbert County.

From what I can tell the southern part of the state and the NE part of the state are great, especially near Ft. Payne and Gadsden. Check out last year's harvest report: http://outdooralabama.com/research-mgmt/...st%20Report.pdf

Pretty telling.

According to a friend, last week Lauderdale WMA only had around 160 permits handed out for 3 days on over 20,000 acres of QDM managed property surrounded by lots of managed property.

Yeah, Lauderdale has a lot, but there are a lot of hunting leases in Waterloo that surround it. I think they're done with gun hunts, though.

yea three bucks per year.
AS many does as you want. I think two per day everday. Don't be for sure on that either though. Some counties do have different doe seasons.

I'm going down to Dallas county just south of Selma in a few weeks. This will be the third time I've been there and its a fun time. Killed a 10-pt the first trip in January 2011 and a doe on the opening rifle weekend of 2011. Just not the same as late season. Hopefully the bucks will be rutting and on the move.

I live in north Alabama and can't get fired up about hunting here after hunting in TN. We see 10 times as many deer in south Tn than we do in north Alabama. It is crazy how much difference there is in a short distance.

South TN seems to be much better than north AL IMO. More deer and bigger bucks. I grew up in Norht AL and all I ever wanted was to deer/turkey hunt in TN because it was like 10X better.
I do think in the east part of the state and the south part is hard to beat for big bucks though. So much untouched woods.

There are areas of north Alabama that very few areas of TN can compete with on antlers. Jackson co and parts of Madison and Limestone. Jackson is as good or better than thd Nashville area for huge whitetails.
