Hit up a buddy to find a stand for the season's last hunt yesterday. The wind was contrary, I was under-geared and there was a relentless icy wind working its fingers under my collar, but it was good to be in the woods one last time.

Just at dusk I caught a flash of white and turned to see the edge of a deer's tail slip into some heavy brush. I got the scope on it just in time to catch an eye, ear, and possibly a tiny bit of antler, but despite my best mental calling, it disappeared away from me into the wooded hillside.

With less than 15 minutes of (questionable) shooting light in the little hollow where I sat, I heard light crunching behind me, with a little too much rhythm to be a squirrel. Now this presented a problem I had hoped to avoid, as the property line beneath my stand was a clear dividing line between my shoot/don't shoot zone.

Oh PLEASE don't show me a big buck I can't shoot at!

I twisted my head around just as a quite healthy coyote stalked by at 15 yards.

And then the hunt was over. Climbing down I was thankful for a season filled with compadres who would share a hunting site, for opportunities to bring home a deer this season, for the privilege to help two different men bring their first-ever deer home, and for the restorative nature of spending time in God's slammin' awesome creation.

Cheers, friends!

Good deal nimrod and That is awesome that you could have 2 guys kill their first. Oh and I still got an orange scarf for you, some deer was wearing it and gave it to me, the deer said he saw some crazy nimrod running around the woods with it when it fell onto the ground.

that quite healthy coyote wouldn't have been so healthy after the encounter.

Well, it was across the property lines, and I'm not abusing my hunting privileges for a stinkin' yote.
