I'm reloading for 308. I've been reloading almost a year and I'm fairly familiar with my equipment. The last 2 times I've went and shot my groups are horrible. The only thing I can think of is either my rings/bases/scope have came lose or what I've worked on all summer isn't working now. I use Winchester brass. Cci standard primer and w748 powder. I shot a group with hornady 150 gr btsp in early December that I could cover with a dime. Now my group is close to 4". I've shot sierra gameking 165gr bthp with groups well under an inch. Now they're nowhere near that. Not sure which direction I should go. Just looking for advice and someone with more experience than I have with these problems.

I would say if your loads worked before and nothing has changed they shoild still be good. It could be scope, rings or just plan you. I have seen times I belive too many cups of coffie did it. I usly plame it on the win never me or what I have done. Go back and try it again I bet it comes around.

Check your OAL against the OAL of the cartrages that gave you the tight groups.

I hope your right. I'm leaning towards something in the bases/rings/scope department. But I also know w748 is temperature sensitive. But not sure how sensitive it really is. I don't know that it's so much as me cause I had a friend shoot this setup and his groups were equally as bad. I just wonder if I have a "summer" load and need to find a "winter" load.

The oal never changed on the sierra rounds. I've shot several 3 shot groups with only 2 holes. Now they aren't even close. Unfortunately I made a rookie mistake and didn't record the oal on the hornady rounds. But I know that they are close to what the original group was.

The OAL should not change unless you change your seating die.

Did you clean your rifle lately? I mean really clean the bore. I usually have to shoot 10-15 rounds in my 700 after a cleaning before the groups tighten back up.

Check the crown of the barrel for nicks, as well. Could be a stock fitment issue, or scope, rings or bases.

I'll get a little more in depth. I started trying to reload hornady sst in 165gr. They would not group with varget. So I went to 748 and sgk. Varget and 748 produced very good groups with the sgk. But nothing helped the sst. I finally decided on the 748 because it meters better than varget. Basically same groups between the 2. During hunting season I shot a deer with the sgk. I wasn't pleased with the performance of the bullet. But a 30 yard shot and barely any terminal damage I decided to move to a lighter bullet in a sp. Hornady is what I have readily available at the local store so I got a box. Looked at different sources for a load an started there. I got a group but knew I could get it to shrink so I made up some more rounds with less powder. That day I shot a group that I could cover with a dime. So I made up some and went shooting 2 weeks ago. Groups were very inconsistent. At this point my gun had roughly 300 rounds thru the barrel. So I thought cleaning could be a problem. I cleaned the best that I know how. Went back yesterday and I still had poor groups. I had a box of sgk that I wanted to save but knowing how they shot I took them and tried when I seen that the hornady btsp weren't gonna group. The sgk were as bad as the hornady. I've read that the w748 can be temp sensitive. Is that my problem? I'm gonna check my bases and rings and probably get a can of varget. Just looking for advice in case I'm forgetting something. I know some of you have been reloading for as long as I've been alive and I'm sure you've had the same issues.

1. Check rings, bases, forearm screw, trigger screws.
2. Clean bore. Clean Again. Clean again.
3. Check length of brass, trim back to 010 under SAAMI
4. Do you have a scale to measure your powder? Are you positive your electronic scale is right? I use RCBS 10-10 since mid-80's.
5. Your OAL is always the same +- less than 009?
6. Is the barrel in contact with the stock> Wood or plastic? barrel should be free from muzzle to chamber.
7. Primers seated correctly?

Don't feel bad or get discouraged. This is an easily solved problem.

I'd say your scope is not holding zero. What type of scope are you running?

Dave

Other than loading some alot longer than the originals on the hornady rounds all are probably within .005 on length. I weigh every load but my scale could have went haywire. My brass is under max length. Some is closer to max than others. But when I resize I plan on trimming to get it all the same. I have a free floated barrel and a synthetic stock. I will check all screws including bases and rings. And stock screws. Primer depth hasn't changed.

I'm using a Nikon prostaff scope. It could have gone bad. I got it in a trade. Looking at it it is in good shape. But that doesn't mean it wasn't abused.

If it matters I have a savage model 10.

Dave.

The ones I loaded loaded long have not been shot and are separate from the others. I'm leaning to a base/ring issue but also open minded in this.
