Next time you go to a restaurant and see "market price", this is why you ask first! \:D

Supply and demand. The bluefin fshery is in a lot of trouble and these auction prices are evidence of that. Japan's ever growing demand for tuna and the exploding popularity of sushi around the world are thumping the bluefin population hard. The global regulations are very inconsistent and fish "pirates" from the Middle East and Asia are pursuing major profits with illegal bluefin poaching. The fish only spawns in a few places globally and unfortunately many of them get caught in the Meditteranean before they have a chance to spawn. The Japanese are trying to figure out how to farm them, but they require a whole lot of open water to swim, eat and spawn and the Japanese have not figured out how to farm them in masse yet. It is not a pretty picture. I hope they figure something out because it's a very importantant fish to the vast and diverse ocean ecosystem. Many saltwater fisherman, including the "Wicked Tuna" guys, are trying to help stem the tide.

Plus, it's delicious.

I saw a thing recently where a guy claims to have figured out how to spawn them in "captivity". I hope it works. As much as we're told we need fish in our diet, it's just about gotten too expensive to eat.

Have you seen the "market price" in Japan???

Let's put it this way, if you tip by the percentage then your tip for your meal would easy top $150.

This is not good for the Bluefin Tuna. Like said before with these prices and demind the poaching is way too high. We can put a 100% ban on it in the United States and it will not do any good except to buy a few more years for the rest of the world.
