A couple years back airguns was a big hobby of mine. I still have a few of my favorites in the safe and occasionally pull one of them out and shoot it. A air rifle is about like anything thing else. You get out of them what you put into them. You can flat make the right gun do some amazing things if you spend the money on it. Some of mine even have precision barrels with 1 lb. triggers on them. They will do clover leaf groups off the bench all day long at 35 yards to 40 yards. I prefer a .22 over a .177 but that's just me. The heavier pellet has more foot pounds and less effected by wind. Also a pcp will be more accurate than a spring gun. Most all spring guns are hold sensitive and you have to learn to hold them to be good with them. From my experience the best accuracy in a airgun is when you tune them in around 900 to 950 fps..

Ok cool i figure i can do a lil squirrel hunting this spring and teach my fiances 6 yr old how to handle and learn to shoot in the process

wife just bought me a crosman quest.havent been able to get it out yet but maybe in a week or 2 I will try it out and hope to score on some squirrels before season ends

I am trying to decide what I want. I could actually hit something with stik's Daisy. That may be what I go with. If it doesn't suit me, I can give it to my nephew. 
The variety of air guns these days are amazing. It really all depends on what you want to shoot/ hunt and what you want to spend. As mentioned above, the PCP will be the most accurate type and .22 would be best for a variety of small game. I have a .22 cal Benjamin marauder PCP and I can shoot nickel sized groups @ 40-50 yds.

I have a Gamo Big Cat....177...got a scope on it that came with it...only shoots pellets. At 25 yards...possibly 30 I can pretty much tear up a can...I've never shot it at any critters but it would definitely kill small game...seems like it's 1200' per sec? That may be wrong but something like that

What about using Tungsten pellets, vs. lead pellets?

Tungsten air rifle pellets are not available from what I have seen.

Perhaps not tungsten, but a "lighter than lead" alloy that shoots faster.
My old neighbor shoots out of his backyard, and the non-lead pellets actually break the sound barrier. Pretty sweet, and they're incredibly accurate.
