Also get a property receipt. If ones not offered request one. It should be standard procedure but some of the smaller departments are a little backwards.

Your gun will be taken for evidence and sent to the TBI for ballistics testing. Ask for a evidence property reciept and make sure make, model, and serial number are correct on it as well as your personal information. The gun will be held until the case is over and then returned. I have had several guns sent to the TBI and they were returned just fine. After all of this get ready for the civil lawsuits from the criminals family for several years.

Not in TN. As of 2008 (I think it was), the TN Legislature expanded the "Castle Doctrine" laws to affirmitively stipulate that no civil action shall be allowed in the event that a shooting was ruled justified.

If you're right, and the DA rules your shooting legally justified, the "victim" and/or his family cannot file a civil suit against you.
