They taught in my hcp class that you should be prepared to surrender your firearm with no thought about when you may get it back. Maybe you will, maybe you wont. Might be a good idea to have potential access to another firearm for defensive purposes in case the bad guys friends decide to pay you a visit a few days after the initial incident.

i asked our instructor about it but he never got around to answering me in my thinking if i'm at risk of totally losing the gun then i'm better off carrying a 300 dollar gun that i am competent with rather than a 700 dollar one don't get me wrong i could probably never shoot it again anyway if i had to use it that way but i could stand the loss better

Yes it will be taken. Yes if your found not guilty of any wrong doing it will be returned. Normally you have to wait untill the next avaliable grand jury date so we can present your case to them and let them dismiss it, No true bill.Or if the DA make the decision not to take the case before the Grand Jury. I am Law enforcement and I have done this.

Think about it. You just saved yourself or a loved one. Is that not worth the price of another gun? H*ll, I would buy a thousand new guns if it meant I still had my wife.

Im not law enforcement, but I was involved in a home invasion shooting. The sheriffs dept. took my gun and 1 live round. I was given a piece of paper with all the gun info. I was told I would be contacted, when I could pick it up. I got the pistol back 3 weeks later. I was told they fired the round for testing against the bullet that was found in the intruders shoulder.
