Good question, and glad to hear the wife and I are about to go through the course ourselves.

Also get a property receipt. If ones not offered request one. It should be standard procedure but some of the smaller departments are a little backwards.

in my thinking if i'm at risk of totally losing the gun then i'm better off carrying a 300 dollar gun that i am competent with rather than a 700 dollar one
don't get me wrong i could probably never shoot it again anyway if i had to use it that way but i could stand the loss better

Jeff, just be sure the gun will perform as needed if/when needed. More important to survive than worry about losing a gun.

You will get it back however if the shoot was justified.

Your gun will be taken for evidence and sent to the TBI for ballistics testing. Ask for a evidence property reciept and make sure make, model, and serial number are correct on it as well as your personal information. The gun will be held until the case is over and then returned. I have had several guns sent to the TBI and they were returned just fine. After all of this get ready for the civil lawsuits from the criminals family for several years.

Not in TN. As of 2008 (I think it was), the TN Legislature expanded the "Castle Doctrine" laws to affirmitively stipulate that no civil action shall be allowed in the event that a shooting was ruled justified.

If you're right, and the DA rules your shooting legally justified, the "victim" and/or his family cannot file a civil suit against you.
