Sorry but that velocity is a bit off. I meant to say, 2,900fps. The Varmint hunter in me was showing I guess thinking of all the hot 22 centerfires. 122gr IMR4350 behind a Barnes 300gr semi-spitzer gives 2,900fps Reduces the recoil down to about like a 3 inch 12 gauge and knocks the crud out of a deer without blowing up a ton of meat.

I like the 6.5mm caliber for deer. 260 REM, 6.5 Creedmore, or 6.5 X 55 Swede are all about perfect for deer. If you have any one of these three you don't need to buy another unless you want to.

(Sometimes I just wake up with a feeling I should carry my 270 or 243. I usually follow these feelings just for luck. )

300 win mag and 30-06 both scored this season for a total of 3 deer.

Carried my 270 and 3030 a few times but no meat.

Carried a 7-08 twice and shot a buck but lost him.

Correction to previous post which was a bit confusing.....i hunted with the standard 270 from about 1976 till 2010....then passed that one on to my oldest son.....and have hunted with the 270 WSM since then. Love that caliber as much as Jack O'connor did!

I often hunt with antique rifles in odd or obsolete calibers. This year I hunted with several different combinations.

Opening day I started off with an 1894 Winchester sporting rifle with a 26 inch octagon barrel in 32 Win. Special manufactured in 1903.

At different times throughout rifle season I hunted with the following rifles/calibers:

1895 Winchester 30-40 Krag (killed a large doe using a Western Silvertip cartridge that was at least 60 years old.

1895 Winchester 405 WCF.

Remington Model 14 30 Remington. Wounded and lost a nice buck, still sick about it.

1886 Winchester 45-70.

94 Winchester trapper 45 Colt

H&R Buffalo Classic 38-55 WCF

Model 71 Winchester 348 WCF.

Model 94 carbine in 32 spl

Model 94 carbine 25-35 WCF.

I really enjoy using the odd/obsolete calibers for a different twist. It's also makes for interesting conversation starters when someone asks what kind of rifle it is.

I was wondering when you were going to speak up on this one with your name here being inspired by one of the great old obsolete cartridges of all time. \:\) I've always wanted a Winchester 71 but just haven't gotten around to it yet. The only thing I have that's really an oldie is a 1894 Marlin(new manufacture gun) in 32-20 but it's not really a deer rifle by modern standards.
