I've done several fords and a toyota and we never had to pull the bed off to take the tank off.Maybe a Chevrolet is different, but I wouldn't think so.Have you ever replaced a fuel pump on a truck?

Chevys aren't that much different, but if you don't have a lift, a transmission jack and are working with a higher than half-full tank of gas it is a royal PITA and it's just alot easier to just take the bed off. Since you asked....I have done hundreds of the things over the years, but I was working with the proper equipment. ;\)

To the original poster....make sure that you change the fuel filter when you change the pump and keep it changed on a regular basis and as others have stated...1188 is highway robbery if that is all they are doing.

"Just drop the fuel tank"???

The bed comes off by loosening a few hex bolts. I'm certain it'll be much easier (and less messy) than dropping the tank.

Shouldn't be much over $600. I think the fuel pump for that truck is about $400 I would get $200 plus cost of fuel pump if I was doing it.

When my fuel pump went out a few years back, I think a new one was under $100 from O'Reilly. The guys in the truck shop at my previous employer had it installed in under 30 minutes. They earned a case of beer for their troubles.

I have done this on many a truck, cut an access hole, rivet in a piano hinge on one side and a couple 3/8 inserts on the other and your set for good. Even got fancy once and put counter sunk rivets on the hinge and a few stainless countersunk 5/16 philips head screws on the other.

I agree, or you can cut a square out of the bed above the fuel pump and just bolt a bigger piece back in.
