Yes he is good to go. Mil-spec 7.62x51 is loaded to lower pressure than commercial .308.

Well - you learn something new every day. Thanks to the OP for posting this question.
I thought the same rules applied for 7.62x51 / 308 and 5.56x45 / 223.
I guess I was wrong. Thanks again.

Yeh it's safe. I'm wanting to do the same but haven't been able to come across any 7.62x51 rounds
