That's weird - mine went out in my Chevy Cavalier last week. I got it replaced, grand total was $688. Your pump probably costs more, but that sounds high.

Go on the Internet and find out what one costs, and add a few hundred for labor.

PM me if you want the name and number of my mechanic. His shop recently moved out of Memphis into north Bartlett (Germantown Pkwy and Old Brownsville).

Just an FYI, your fuel pump cost about $150.00. Two people can set the bed off in about twenty minutes. It then takes about thirty seconds to change the pump. No need whatsoever to drop tank. Here is the link.

I have heard they go out alot because they are lubricated by the fuel in the tank and if you never fill it up they never get lubricated.

No clue if that is true or not.

Hope you can get it fixed ALOT cheaper than that.

We always take the bed off lot easier than dropping a fuel tank

Sounds a little high, but the tools required and diagnosis time, not to mention towing, I'd say it's about right. Do it yourself when fuel is involved and without proper tools can be risky...

Let me correct that, it could be deadly.

Check the price for a lifetime warranty pump from Auto Zone. Then pay the labor.

Call gateway on Covington pike. They have done a lot of work for me and I have always be happy. I will sometimes buy the part and just have them put it in.

Partly, or mostly correct. The pump assembly is cooled by the fuel, if you consistently run with a 1/4 tank or less it can cause the pump to burn out. I would also replace the fuel filter at the same time as a clogged filter can cause the pump to run at a constant high pressure leading to failure. I would also highly recommend cleaning your tank when you replace pump assembly.

Most shops will do that, but they typically won't warranty the part (so if it's faulty, you pay them to take it back out, then you take it back to the store). If something happens after the work is done, you could be on the hook. 90% of the time that isn't a problem, but I had an issue with it once on an O2 sensor.

All of this crap makes me wish I had spent more time in high school learning automotive repair when I had hours and hours to kill. By the time I hit college, life was a rollercoaster and my time for side projects evaporated pretty quickly.
