Kahr PM9. I love mine. I hate my Crossbreed Holster though. I have to get a different one. Thinking about a Milt Sparks.
Finding a holster is just as important as your firearm.

If it was me.. and assuming I had no other handguns, it would be a G19, a G23, or a G26. The G19 (9mm) and G23 (.40) are the same dimensions, just different calibers. The G26 (9mm) is slightly smaller.
My next purchase will be the Springfield XD-S (.45). I can't wait to get my hands on one.
Also.. I would highly consider the Ruger LCP or S&W Bodyguard (both .380). They are small, but very easy to conceal.
I copy/pasted my answer below from another thread someone started with the same question.
---
The best advice you can get is to buy something you're comfortable with. Don't buy something you feel is too heavy or too big. It doesn't do you any good if you leave it at home. Don't buy something based on "cool factor". A carry gun is a tool - not a toy.
There's a saying... a mouse in the pocket is better than a lion at home. A full size 1911 may seem great, but if you get tired of trying to conceal it or find that it's too long or too heavy, you'll wind up not carrying it with you.
The second best piece of advice you can get is to buy a quality belt. Don't depend on some average department store belt to hold up well. Buy a stiff, quality belt and it will make carrying much more comfortable (assuming you'll be carrying a belt-attached holster).
This guy makes great belts that last for years. The belt I'm wearing right now came from him about 7 years ago.
http://www.thebeltman.net/
I don't think you can go wrong with a Glock - I'm a little biased towards them. I would also not hesitate to buy a Gen 4. I have not had any problems out of mine. However, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Gen 3 either. Personal preference.
I think the G19, G23, and G26 are great options.
Also consider looking at the S&W MP Shield or the Springfield XDS. Both are nice compact guns, although they don't have the magazines capacity of the Glocks.

Get what feels right to YOU and YOU can shoot good with.
Now some guys do carry a full size 45 and they don't have any problems with them. Me, a full size 45 stays either in the home or truck. I'm after concealed 100% of the time, I do not want people to know I'm packing.
My main carry gun is a Ruger LCP, I can carry that gun on me all year long no mater what I'm wearing. Shirt, jeans and jacket or t-shirt and shorts or Sunday dress coat and tie. I'm carrying in all of them and nobody knows it. My heavy gun is in my truck, my LCP can help me get to it if it comes to that.
I also have a Ruger LC9 which is a 9mm and a Ruger LCR which is a 38 Spcl. I carry them all in the winter and the LCP and LC9 in the summer.
What was said before about the gunbelts is right on the mark. No mater the gun holster you get you NEED a good gun belt. It makes all the difference in the world ever the little LCP fits better. Spend the money on a REAL gunbelt.

I hate my Crossbreed Holster though. Why you hate it? I love mine.
And to answer the OPs question, my current carry gun is an XDm 3.8 compact in 40 S&W. Ill probly buy an XDs when they are released in 40 S&W or 9mm.

It carries well, but it takes too dang long to put on. I hate fiddle farting around trying to put the dang thing on. My Concealco holster for my HK is on and off in literally 5 seconds. Also my Kahr doesn't fit snug inside the holster.

For ammo capacity and little recoil, about anything that fits your hand in 9mm would be my choice. I'm not a big guy, so most 9mm's for me are holster carry, and do not fit into a pocket. For me, true pocket pistols are 380's, 38's, or smaller.
I have both a baby Glock and S&W Shield. The Shield is a little thinner, but both carry equally well in my opinion. The Glock does add a few of rounds extra ammo.
For the extra ammo and since reliability isn't an issue with most top manufacturers, I don't carry a revolver any more. If you run into trouble, you might be facing a group of thugs, or multiple targets, so the extra rounds of ammo are important to me.
+1 to Nyper's comment about a belt. Spend the money and get a good belt. AND spend a little money and get a good holster.
As for the specific gun, I'd start with a Glock or S&W M&P, or Springfield XD in 9mm. Whichever model fits best.

i have never had a problem putting my crossbreed on. and if the gun don't fit snug, you can heat it with a hair dryer and adjust it.

I've alwys had a liking to the 38 sp, it just feels right to me. Ever though I have a Crossbreed IWB holster for it I still wear my jacket over it so I only use it in the winter. Plus it lets me have all the 3 of Rugers LC models.
My LCP gets the most wearing by far.
My next one will be a Springfield XD-S 45 unless Ruger comes out with one before I buy it.

My usual carry gun is a Kahr PM9 in a crossbreed holster. Holster is OK, cumbersome to put on and I need to wear pants a size bigger in the waist. Summertime or in places that I don't want to chance being noticed at all, I just slip a Keltec 380 in my pocket.
