I'm looking to get a new trail cam.
What do you all recommend? the local sportsman store has a moultrie on sale with IR flash $54 I can't remember the model number.
Walmart has a primos black flash on sale for $99.
What is a good decent priced camera?
What kind of flash should I go with?
Is it worth spending more money and getting one of the $200 cameras?

I would go with black flash. Been doing my own experimenting and deer spook from the IR cameras more than I believed they would. My Moultrie M80 Black Flash does not seem to spook them as bad so far. I am testing in video mode though, not still picture.

^^^I don't have this problem but that is just my experience with IR, maybe my deer are more at peace with it for some reason. Who knows, but he is not the only one claiming this so I'm sure there is some merit here, but I've not had this problem. To the contrary, I've had spooking with incandescent flashes up close.

I will try and upload some videos I have shot. The deer looks at the camera for about 3-4 seconds and then gets out of dodge. Never realized anything when just taking pics but the video really tells the story. On one pull I had 7 bucks and 4 of them shot off.

Every deer is unique, but some deer, especially the oldest and most experienced deer, absolutely will avoid visible flash cameras. Go with black-flash, and expect to pay around $200 for a quality black-flash camera.

I don't seem to have that problem with deer spooking at my cam, I get multiple pics of the same bucks and they never even seem to look at the camera, I can tell you that wildgame innovations has excellent customer service and I rarely have any problems with them, I just got a cheaper moultrie but have only had it out once,so far so good

What black-flash cams have you tried? You really need to see some comparisons before you fully believe deer are not avoiding your cameras. And that's what I'm talking about here, not "scare" but "avoidance."

I agree that videos are the key. Like you said, if the camera is in picture mode you will not get a complete representation of the deer's reaction to the flash. I've had plenty of deer see the red IR and bug out immediately. I've had others stare it for a few seconds or stare at it off and on for a few minutes and not get bothered by it. When coyotes see it they are gone in a flash. I also hang my cameras at least 8 ft high, so when deer see them they are looking up at them and many times it still scares them. I will only buy black flash from now on, especially now that you can get a quality black flash like the BF-7 for just over $150.
