I am picking up a deer from the processor tomorrow. I am getting a roast for the first time and will put it in the crockpot to eat Friday night. Anybody have a good recipe?

There are so many different directions you can go with this....

Basic ingredients:
Roast
2 quarts Stock (beef or venison)
salt & pepper
Onions and garlic
Root vegetables of your choosing (carrots, celery, potatoes etc)
~1 cup Red wine, brandy or even beer (red wine or brandy preferred)
Flour (optional) to thicken the stock
Fresh herbs and seasonings of your choice
(pretty much anything else you want to put in there including bacon)

You can brown the roast on a skillet first, but it is not mandatory. Place it in the crock pot with everything else, put it in on low and go to work. Come home and eat.

Every time you open the lid to check on the meal, you add 20 minutes of cook time.

How thick do you want it? Do you want a soupy serving or a very thick stew that might be served over bread, rice or polenta? If you want it thick, add some flour. Or, coat the roast with flour before you brown it.

Do you want a all inclusive meal? Add potatoes, peas etc. If you want to have sides, you might hold the potatoes etc to serve as sides.

If you want it fatty, add bacon, if you want it lean, don't.

Its a simple process that is difficult to screw up, requires very little prep time and very little clean up. You'll do fine. Post a pic up for us.

Oh, and throw a Bay Leaf or two in there. (Don't eat them, though)

Yeah that's a great sounding recipe, Poser. That's about the same way I cook a beef roast too, maybe a little worcestershire sauce and oregano added also.

Large sweet potato cubes are awesome in Crock pot roasts. Better for you than the standard Russets, too.

Yep. The high heat from searing creates the "Maillard reaction". This series of chemical reactions that alters the structure of the sugars and proteins on the meat's surface, producing new flavors.
