I did some research on heavier .223's because i wanted a multi purpose bullet for deer & coyotes and something that could run out to 500yrds on steel if i wanted. I settled on Nosler 77gr OTM's. But others that were in the running were Hornaday 75gr TAP, Barnes 70gr TSX & Sierra 77gr SMK w/cannalur. My specific rifle will push the Noslers @2900FPS and carry 900ftlbs/energy out to 200 yards, although i would limit deer to 100 and under with a perfect shot opportunity. Here is one of the articles i use for my decision:

Here is pic of mild steel target (6") at 200 yards
Stevens 200 / .223 - 22"barrel - 2900fps

No...I cant find the article but one of the reasons i did not was the VLD like the SMK's in that they have a little thicker jacket. the TAP and Noslers have a thinner jacket which aids in expansion and frangibility(sp) which in turn translates into better terminal ballistics on soft targets. If I remember correctly the trick was to load them short of maximum velocity which would allow the bullet to expand/explode creating a devestating wound channel. I took a doe this year with the noslers at 82yards(per LRF) and can say the damage was impressive...1" above shoulder, hit rib and exploded - both lungs and heart were jelly, she ran dead for 20 yards or so then tipped over. 2 small exit wounds and i was able to recover 28grs +\- of fragments. Not saying that the VLD's wont do the job, lot of folks use them with success, I just did a LOT of reading and tried a few, found my rig liked the Noslers, so took it out with specific intention of trying in on a smallish doe. BTW took hot rod .243 along with incase a big boy stepped out...I wasnt going to be "undergunned" either \:\)

I use the 65 gr Sierra Game King SBT and 25 grs Varget at 3,000 fps and it just flattens whitetails,

Nosler 50 or 55 gr Btip or the 60 gr. Partition . At 212 yds. 50 gr. Btip will hammer a deer.

I've used the 70 vld with varget and liked the results. Killed deer from 50 yards out to 300. Under 100 the bullet didn't exit all others had a golfball size exit wound. Barrel was a 1/8 twist.

1:8 be fine with everything mentioned...your only limits will be having to load them "mag length".
