Anyone know why the tradition for New Year's is to eat black-eyed peas for good luck?
If I'm not mistaken it dates back to the Civil War and Sherman's March to the Sea which ended on December 22. Along the way he burned and destroyed everything in his path. He looted and robbed and depleted all the food sources. What food and livestock that wasn't eaten was taken along on the march. Grain was presumably fed to the livestock so they also took all they could find leaving behind silos full of the lowly black-eyed pea. The peas were actually what was being fed to the livestock at the time. After he passed through the Southerners began coming out of hiding and faced near starvation. All they had left was the black-eyed peas which they were lucky to have for existance. And now you know the rest of the story...
