Guys, I'm having trouble sighting in my rifle. I've checked my rings and bases for tightness, checked rings for scope clearance and still can't get the thing to group more than 2 shots together. The only other thing that doesn't seem right is the factory base that came on the gun. There is a gap between the barrel and the base, and there is quite a bit of flexing there. Have any of you used any other bases on these guns, and if so what kind? Or does anyone have another suggestion as to what may be wrong. Thanks guys.

Bedding the base should cure the flexing issue. This a video of a Rem. 700 but you can get an idea. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nv5KCXchSgY

That's a neat process but I'm not sure it would help. The base that came on my gun is 4-6" longer than the screws that hold that end in. That is where the flexing and gap are. I tried moving the rings back as far as I could and that helped some. I'm just plain ignorant when it comes to these things. I may just buy a shorter base and try that. If it fixes the problem great, if not then who knows. Thanks for the help.

That's kind of what I'm thinking too DA. May have to make a trip up that way since you don't get this way very often. This flipping thing has me aggravated to say the least!

Here is a link to some info that has helped me.

Also it might help if we knew what caliber/round your shooting.

.280 with Burris Signature Zee rings, Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40. Shooting Federal Vital Shock 140gr ballistic tips. Thanks for that link. I can see that 3 of those may be an issue already, but time will tell.

How long are you waiting between shots? H&Rs generally hate heat and groups open way up. I'm shooting an H&R Smokeless ML and the factory base has held up fine (knock on wood). The factory doesn't Locktite the base screws when they install them, so if you haven't already put Locktite on them you need to.
There are a couple on piece bases out there but they are tall enough to put a 50mm+ scope on so your Zeiss will be way off the barrel.
