What makes you think there is no rhyme or reason? Believe it or not, the TWRA actually has a pretty good idea of what counties can handle antlerless harvest and which ones can't. They do thermal imaging, get calls about damage caused by deer, and have eyes in the field year around.

If what you suggested was put into place, many areas would be over hunted very quickly. Putting antlerless hunts late in the year actually prevents excess harvest but allows the opportunity because the opening weekend warriors have already put their guns away until next year.

I should have said "no rhyme or reason to which counties have hunts on which dates". I agree with the effort TWRA puts into determining population densities and the number of antlerless deer that should be harvested.

The hunt dates are my issue. Look at the hunt grid, some counties one week, other counties a different week. There are 9 counties that only have 1 hunt and they are spread out over different weeks from opening weekend to the end of the season. That is what doesn't make sense.

In my opinion, a dead anterless deer is dead regardless of when it is killed. Roane County currently gets 3 1-week hunts with 1 antlerless deer per hunt (no hunt during the last 2 weeks of the season, explain that?). So I can kill 3 antlerless deer, but only on certain dates. Three dead spread out over 5 weeks (while constantly double checking the calendar and the hunt table) or 3 dead in one weekend is the same thing.

Harvest can be controlled many ways, and ways simpler for hunters.
