I have been reading several posts by guys on here about using different powders in their MLIIs than those reccomended by Savage. I have seen several people that use RL7, and am wondering why you chose to use that powder? This is a powder that I already have on hand, so I am all about trying something different, but where do y'all find legitimate load data for it?

Who tested these loads and what were the parameters? I see that it mentions "watch for pressure signs," but what are pressure signs when there is no case? What are teh advantages of RL7 in the MLII?

63-65 grns in a .50 cal is the sweet spot in many .50 cals and no pressure worries.

Thanks, guys. Tar12, that is what I was curious about, the sweet spot. I am not looking to "hot rod" anything, as the 5744 works just fine and my shots are not likely to be over 150 yards, I just have some RL7 on hand from when I had my 45/70, and now also use it in my .22-250 and .223. Are there any worries of temperature sensitivity or difficult ignition? Do I have to change from the MMP orange sabot for this?

No temp sensitivity or ignition problems. Re-7 and 5744 are both double based powders which means they have a higher nitro content..therefore easy to ignite and very reliable. You will gain 200-250 fps going with the Re-7.No you do not have to change sabots. The orange sabots are notorious for loosing petals but you need not worry if you notice this as long as the base is intact and the accuracy is good.

I switched from 5744 to Re7 to gain more fps and its a little cleaner burning. I shoot it with a 325 ftx and it shoots great with this powder. I wanted to try h4198 but also heard of ignition problems in colder weather, so naturally Re 7 fit the bill with both reliability and good velocity for long range shooting. Not to mention its very easy to find in stock

I started with a 62 gr load of RL7 and a 300gr Barnes Expander for a Maine black bear hunt and have yet to change it back to my old "whitetail load."
